Charles Lee Cary, 74, of Ottumwa passed away Friday morning, March 17, 2017, at his home in Ottumwa. Charles Lee Cary, son of Edgar Ernest and Edna June (Myers) Cary, was born June 6, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Charles was raised in Ottumwa and attended Ottumwa schools. He served in the United States Army from July 25, 1961, to July 26, 1963, and spent six months in Europe. Upon his discharge, he was award the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Army Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal and went on to serve an additional 15 years in the Army Reserves.

Charles married the love-of-his-life, Flola “Sue” Arminta Downing, November 16, 1963, in Ottumwa. They made their home in Ottumwa, and Charles began working at John Deere Manufacturing. He worked there as a welder and after 28 years, retired in 2001.

In his free time, Charles enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Charles family includes his wife, Flola “Sue”, of Ottumwa; his children: Debbie (& Jim) Williams, Charles Cary Jr., Edgar Cary and Cindy Cary, all of Ottumwa; two grandchildren, Steven (& Samantha) Williams and Kassy Williams; and three great-grandchildren, Emmy, Liam and Keaton Williams.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by two sisters: Carolyn Stilley and Sandy Dage; and two brothers, Marvin and John Cary.

Graveside memorial services for Charles will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Shaul Cemetery near Ottumwa with Pastor Lloyd Osborn of the Ottumwa Open Bible Church officiating.
Graveside Military Honors will be presented by VFW Post #775 and American Legion Post #3. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel of Oskaloosa is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made in his name and given to the family.
