The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of February is in honor of James Joseph Mitrisin.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, May 28, 1946. He served his tour of duty at the U.S. Naval Station at San Pedro, California as an aviation storekeeper. He was honorably discharged May 26, 1949.

After returning home he worked briefly for Mahaska County as a dragline operator and then went to work in Ottumwa at John Morrell. At the time of his retirement he was the Vice-President and Loan Chairman of the Morrell Credit Union. He went on to work at the Elks Club and Musco Lighting as the “Kid’s Van Driver”. He volunteered for many years at the V.A. Hospital in Knoxville.
