Mary Alice Morrissey, formerly of Moweaqua, IL., died March 6 at Montezuma Specialty Care in Montezuma. Miss Morrissey was born July 16, 1919 in Bloomington, IL., the daughter of John Francis and Alice Elvin Morrissey.

Mary graduated from Trinity, now Central Catholic High School, in Bloomington, IL and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education at Illinois State Normal, now Illinois State University, in Normal, IL. She earned a Master of Science degree in Library Science at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Mary taught more than 50 years in high schools across southern Illinois, including: Woodland, Melrose Park, Wethersfield, Kewanee, Stonington and Moweaqua. During her career, she made several trips to Europe as a chaperone.

Mary was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Moweaqua and was active in the church’s Rosary Society, and member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of a dinner group, started in Kewanee in the 1950s. The last time she and the group met was for her 97th birthday in Montezuma, IA in 2016.

She is survived by two nieces: Jean Bustos of Montezuma and Katherine (& Charles) Nold of Onaka, SD; a nephew, Jack (& Colette) Morrissey of Lenexa, KS; and her sister-in-law, Jean Morrissey of Montezuma.

Her brother, John Morrissey, died in 2009.

The Rev. Ronald Hodges celebrated a private Mass of Christian Burial and she was buried at Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
