Marvin Current, 81, of Oskaloosa, died peacefully at his home north of Oskaloosa on Sunday, March 5, 2017. He was born March 2, 1936, in Poweshiek County. From the time he was born Marvin was cared for, and raised, by his grandparents, John and Effie Toll McKee.

Marvin graduated from Oskaloosa High School and attended one year of college at William Penn. In August of 1960, he was united in marriage to Sheryl Briney at the Methodist Church in New Sharon. To this union four children were born: Wendy, Marc, Lee, and Leanne.

Marvin and his grandfather John McKee owned and operated Pothoven Oil Station in Oskaloosa. Marvin went on to purchase the Apco Station in Oskaloosa, which he owned and operated until 1974, when he sold it back to the oil company. Later in 1974, Marvin went to work for Mahaska County, he retired from the county in 1999, after 25 years of service.

In March of 1981, his wife Sheryl died. On April 20, 1984, he was united in marriage to Joyce (Schinkel) Van Mersbergen.

Marvin was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed visiting with people, telling stories and jokes. He also enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, especially trips to Minnesota, playing guitar, watching westerns, dancing, and trap shooting. Marvin had a lifelong love of Motorcycles, he enjoyed taking trips on his Harley and attending motorcycle races. He has also enjoyed the last five winters in Florida with Joyce. He looked forward to discussing the ever-changing gas prices and weather with his brother Joe and friends at the “Big Mac Supper Club” (McDonalds) in Oskaloosa.

His family includes his wife of over 32 years, Joyce Current of Oskaloosa; four children: Wendy (& Jeff) Bracy of New Sharon, Marc (& Sherry) Current of Barnes City, Lee Current of Pella, and Leanne Bartlow of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren: Dustin, Andrew, Brett, Alex, Megan, Mason, and Caleb; three great grandchildren: Madison, BellaRae, and Camden; two step sons: M. Ray (& Julie) Van Mersbergen of Ft. White, Florida and Don (& Winnie) Van Mersbergen of Oskaloosa; two step grandchildren, Michael and Cash; his sister, Sharon (& Jerry) Thompson of Oskaloosa; his brother, Larry Joe (& Betty) Current of Oskaloosa; sisters in law: LeAnn Current (Jerry’s widow) of New Sharon, Leona “Toni” Kechter (Joyce’s sister) of Lakewood, Colorado, and Karen Briney (Bill’s Widow) of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; a brother, Jerry Current; and two brothers in law, Ray Kechter and Bill Briney.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 10, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Steve Cox officiating.
Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
