Brown’s career night sparks Dutch in women’s basketball victory

Central College

DUBUQUE — Some nights the shots fall and Wednesday night was one of those nights for Central College freshman forward Kendall Brown (Moravia), who scored a career-high 23 points in a 50-46 win over the University of Dubuque.

Entering the contest Brown averaged 2.4 points per game but the Dutch were shorthanded Wednesday night, as they were without their leading scorer, forward Claire Marburger (sophomore, Perry) and the freshman took advantage of the opportunity. Brown corralled nine rebounds and had five blocks.

“Kendall Brown had a career night and led us offensively,” said coach Chelsea Petersen. “Her teammates recognized the hot hand and continued to make post entries.”

Brown finished the night shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) had 14 points and four assists, junior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) added seven points and eight rebounds, junior guard Alison Malaby (Mechanicsville, North Cedar HS) grabbed eight boards.

“Alison Malaby attacked the rim all night,” said Petersen.

Dubuque won the rebound battle 64-44 but Central held the Spartans to 24.6-percent shooting from the field.

“The defense was tremendous tonight and much improved from recent games,” said Petersen. “It was in no way a perfect game but we battled, handled runs, and came away with a big win. This game epitomized what it looks like to come together and play hard.”

Central continues Iowa Conference play Saturday at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium when Coe College comes to Pella for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the women beginning at 2 p.m. The Kohawks won the first matchup with the Dutch 72-59. Coe (9-10 overall, 4-6 conference) enters the contest coming off an 83-51 road loss to Wartburg Wednesday.
