Robert J. Slycord, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, January 23, 2017, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born Thursday, October 6, 1921, in Oskaloosa, the son of James and Lela Fern Almond Slycord.
Bob graduated from Oskaloosa High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
Bob worked for several years as a truck driver for Ben J. Bernstein & Son and for M. Shrago and Son.
On October 16, 1985, Bob was united in marriage to Margaret Rust at Oskaloosa.
Bob loved his dog, going camping and listening to Margaret play the organ. He also loved going to outreach stores and buying things for his family. Most of all he loved being with his family and caring for his wife.
Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret Slycord of Oskaloosa; five step sons: Darrell (& Toni) Rust of Beacon, David Rust of Oskaloosa, Eddie (& Julie) Rust of Pleasantville, Marvin (& Rebecca) Rust of Oskaloosa and Gary (& Diana) Rust of Eddyville; and a step daughter, Margaret (& Jim) Morrow of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a step son, Billie Rust; six brothers: Gerald, Larry, Danny, Willard, James and Albert Slycord; and six sisters: Myrtle Rea, Pauline Buyert, Mildred Lockard, Patricia Menninga, Francine Hammen and Kathryn Slycord.
As was his wish, Bob’s body has been cremated.
No services are planned at this time.
Burial of his cremated remains will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa at a later date. Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
