PELLA— The first meet back after the Christmas break for the Central College women’s track team resulted in a team title at the Dutch Athletics Classic.

The Dutch piled up 139 team points to earn the top spot. Baker University (Kan.) was second with 124 points.

Running a career best mile time of five minutes, 24.89 seconds, sophomore Rachel Peter (Prairie City, PCM HS) blitzed the rest of the field by over 10 seconds.

“Rachel had a good day,” coach Joe Dunham said. “She’s looking healthy and we’re excited to see what she can do this year.”

Lorell Stuht (senior, Loveland, Colo.) started 2017 off right in the weight throw, reaching 53 feet, 2 inches for first place. Fellow throwers Emily Burt (freshman, Freeport, Ill.) and Macin Harvey (sophomore, Hartley, HMS HS) also registered top-eight finishes in the weight throw and shot put.

“We had some really good performances in the throws today,” Dunham said.

Whitney Burgardt (sophomore, Britt, West Hancock HS) picked up an individual victory in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 10.06 seconds. The quartet of Kate Patton (junior, Murray), Emma Drees (senior, Waukee), Morgan Koenigs (senior, Mapleton, MVAO HS) and Hope Heitman (sophomore, Guttenberg, Clayton Ridge HS) won the 4×400-meter relay in 4:11.83.

“Overall it was a good performance by both of our teams,” Dunham said. “It was a good launching point to figure out where we are at.”

Central heads north to Platteville, Wis. For the Pioneer Open on Saturday, January 28.
