Dean Lytle Anderson, 88, of Leighton, died Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. He was born Friday, May 4, 1928, in Wright, the son of Benjamin Julius and Carolyn Lillie Lytle Anderson.

Dean graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the Class of 1945.

On July 30, 1950, Dean was united in marriage to Iva June Walston at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1951, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant First Class in 1953.

Dean cleared the land for his farms using a Cat D8 bulldozer and an excavator. He farmed his whole life in the Leighton and Barnes City areas.

Dean was a very accomplished carpenter. He enjoyed attending auctions, restoring antiques, fishing and hunting.

Dean is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Iva Anderson of Leighton; five daughters: Pam (& Daniel) Sanders of Gibson, Pat (& Mark) Hanselman of New Sharon, Karen (& Dock) Blankenship of Brooklyn, Carol Walker of Oskaloosa and Sonya (& Rod) Mason of Barnes City; a son: Rick (& Crystal) Anderson of New Sharon; 14 grandchildren: Stacie (& Larry) Cameron, Eric (& Megan) Sanders, Wendy (& Jake) Dayton, Ben (& Sherry) Anderson, Scott (& Jill) Anderson, Travis (& Olivia) Hanselman, Holly Hanselman (& Waylon Williams), Isaac (& Liz) Knoot, Isaiah (& Amanda) Knoot, Anson Walker (& Danielle Reed), Amber (& David) Bruce, Joshua (& Cassie) Mason, Jesse (& Savanna) Mason, and Kelsey (& Weslee) McMahan; and 30 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Ron Walker; a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawn Anderson; two great granddaughters: Zoey Reese Sanders and Daisy Grace Cameron; and two brothers: B. Lee Anderson and Larry J. Anderson.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 23, 2017, at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will be held Monday, January 23, 2017, from 9 A.M. until service time at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. Dean’s family will be present at the funeral chapel during that time to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the New Sharon or Barnes City Fire Department.
