Mary Lorraine Cook, 93 of Montezuma passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines. Mary was born on January 23, 1923 to Harvey and Maude (Halterman) Smith at Grinnell, IA.

Mary attended Grinnell schools. On February 8, 1941, she was united in marriage to Howard C. Cook in the Methodist Parsonage in Montezuma. To this union four children were born: Sandra (Sandi), Larry, James and Robert.

Mary and Howard first made their home in Grinnell before moving to Montezuma in 1953, where they continued to live until their deaths. Howard died July 21, 1992, but Mary continued to live in the family home until the time of her death.

Mary was a homemaker and later was a distributor for Avon for many years.

Mary was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Literary Club, the U.M.W. and Dorcas Class, among many other groups. Mary loved her family, her church and the community of Montezuma. She liked collecting Precious Moments, cardinals and snowmen figurines, which she shared with her friends when having coffee gatherings in her home. Mary was very social and enjoyed being with all of her friends at church, her birthday group and the townspeople of Montezuma.

She is survived by her children: Sandi (& Arlo) Hall of Des Moines and Bob Cook of Des Moines; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mary Cook and Susan Cook; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; two sons, Jim and Larry Cook; three sisters: Myrtle Lee Vitera, Florence McDowell and Elna Stanley.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon, January 19, 2017 at the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
A luncheon will follow the burial back at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
