Katherine Tanke, 76, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, January 8, 2017, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born Friday, November 1, 1940, in Columbia, Missouri, the daughter of Gilbert and Myrtle Steers Baker.
Katie worked for a time at Pierson Seed Producers and The Coffee Cup in Oskaloosa.
She was united in marriage to Leland Tanke and he later passed away.
Katie enjoyed putting together watches, making jewelry and making hard rock candy for her grandchildren.
She is survived by her two daughters: Vickie Absheer of Oskaloosa and Betty Jane (& Brad) Rice-Tucker of Ball, Louisiana; a son, Sam Rice of Paris, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Allen of Barnes City; a and brother-in-law, Lester Wilhite of Columbia, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Robert “Buddy” Johnson; three sisters: Betty, Dorothy and Lucille; and two brothers: Billy and Charles.
As was her wish, Katie’s body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time. Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
