Bernice Thompson, 88, of Sigourney and formerly of Rose Hill, passed away Tuesday morning, January 10, 2017, at the Sigourney Care Center.

Bernice Marie Thompson, daughter of Mack and Mary Almina (Mangerson) Rogers, was born August 2, 1928, at the home of her parents in rural Oskaloosa.

Bernice attended Buckeye Country School until age eleven when the family moved to Rose Hill.

July 12, 1950, she married Harley Raymond Thompson in Keokuk County. They made their first home on a farm near Rose Hill and later moved to Rose Hill. Bernice’s husband, Harley, tragically passed away in 1968, leaving her with five children to raise by herself.

Bernice had the heart of a caregiver and for many years assisted older people in their homes. She later babysat for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other children.

She enjoyed mushroom hunting and picking blackberries. She was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church. Bernice was loved by many because of her generous, caring heart, but she was also known as someone who did not put up with any nonsense or bad behavior.

Her family includes her children: Shari (& Terry) Burger of What Cheer, Iowa and Richard Thompson of Rose Hill, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Richard (& Kim) Thompson Jr., Chris (& Julie) Lundy, Patrick Lundy, Randy (& Heather) Thompson Jr., Courtney Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Josh Bueltel, and Joseph Bueltel; many great –grandchildren; many adopted grandchildren; and a dear friend, Doris Chambers.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Bernice was preceded in death by four children: Randy, Michael “Nipper”, Jimmie “Albert,” and infant, Sheila Thompson; a great-grandson, Colten Lundy; and a son-in-law, Calvin Lundy.

Funeral services for Bernice will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2017, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Del Bittner officiating.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Friday morning, at the funeral chapel. The family will greet visitors from 9:30 a.m. to service time.
Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery near Rose Hill.
Memorials may be made to the family.
