Wilma Boender Van Weelden, 88, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, December 8, 2016, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born May 18, 1928, in Harvey, Iowa, the daughter of Case and Grace Van Veldhuizen Nunnikhoven.

Wilma attended country school in Mahaska County through 8th grade. As a young lady, she worked cleaning homes and helping young mothers care for their families. On August 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to Samuel Boender in Oskaloosa.

Following their marriage Wilma stayed home to care for her family and home. She also helped Sam on their farm east of Oskaloosa. On August 8, 1996, Sam died.

Wilma remained on the farm. On May 22, 1998, she was united in marriage to William Van Weelden in Oskaloosa; Bill died on September 1, 2004. A few years after Bill died, Wilma moved into Oskaloosa.

Wilma was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. She was a devoted wife and mother, she delighted in cooking and caring for her family. She cooked countless family meals and took many meals to the guys in the field during busy times on the farm. She loved singing and playing the piano, which she taught herself to do. Wilma also enjoyed collecting cookbooks and taking photos of her family and landscapes.

Her family includes her three children: Glenda Goemaat of New Sharon, Stan (& Lila) Boender of Oskaloosa, and Wanita (& George) Callas of Olathe, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; her brother, Abe Nunnikhoven of Oskaloosa; her two sisters, Mary Ann Van Kooten and Frances Walraven, both of Oskaloosa; brothers and sisters in law, Harry & Bynie Boender of Oskaloosa, Marilyn Boender (Cornie’s widow) of Oskaloosa, Cornelia Bruxvoort of Newton, and Harold & Leona Van Veldhuizen of Pella; three step daughters and their families, Sharon Davis, Laura (& Ron) Branderhorst, and Linda (& Randall) Courduff; a step son and his family, William “Ben” (& Twyla) Van Weelden; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two husbands; her parents; a son in law, Donald Goemaat; two great grandsons, Samuel Boender and T.J. Goemaat; a grandson in law, Todd Ferguson; and many others.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday in the basement of the church.
Burial is in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Sunday afternoon from 1-3 in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
