Pierre Wins Silver Division Title at Augsburg Open
Minneapolis, Minn.–The Statesmen wrestling team battled yet another tough field as it competed at the Auggie-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg Saturday.
William Penn put individuals in both the Gold and Silver divisions (there were two weights that made up a Bronze division as well).
Darquell Pierre had WPU’s best showing as he won Silver’s 133-pound weight class, going 3-0 with a fall and two decisions. In the finals, Pierre defeated Riley Altenburg of Buena Vista 5-3.
Matthew Cuthbert (So., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) topped the Gold participants by claiming two wins at heavyweight. 125-pounder John Altieri (So., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) and 149-pounder Brad Watson (Sr., Rolla, Mo., Physical Education) also picked up one victory each via fall.
Fabian Rodriguez (So., Manassas, Va., Business Management), in fourth place at 141, and Johnny Hopper (Jr., Basehor, Kan., Psychology), in sixth at 165, matched Pierre by placing in the Silver division. Rodriguez earned two wins (one technical fall), while Hopper had a pair of triumphs (one fall).
Andruw Goin (So., Belton, Mo., Psychology and Sociology), who won once by fall, advanced all the way to the consolation finals at heavyweight, while fellow 285-pounder Jalen Blanchard (Fr., Lake in the Hills, Ill.) as well as 165-pounder Jordan Lockhart (Jr., Lawton, Okla., Communications) also both pinned one opponent apiece.
Kionte Crocker (Jr., Brandon, Fla., Industrial Technology) won one time at 149 pounds as well.
