2 GRINNELL FOOTBALL PLAYERS COLLECT ALL-MIDWEST CONFERENCE HONORS
GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College’s Jacob Bernholtz ’17 (left) and Ryan Slager ’19 (right) have been named to the All-Midwest Conference Football Team for the 2016 campaign.
Bernholtz, a 5-10, 195-pound running back from Huxley, Iowa (Ballard), and Slager, a 6-0, 222-pound linebacker from Orland Park, Ill. (Amos Alonzo Stagg), were named to the second team.
Bernholtz finished the season with 703 yards, which ranks fourth in the MWC. He scored four touchdowns and also caught nine passes for 65 yards. Bernholtz finished his career with 1,727 yards, which ranks fifth in Pioneer history.
Slager leads the nation in tackles with 154, which is the third-highest total for a season in Pioneer history. He recorded nine tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He has 288 tackles in his career, which is seventh all-time for Grinnell.
League champion Monmouth College dominated the individual awards with Thomas Lesniewski (Defensive Lineman of the Year), Kolton Koch (Offensive Lineman of the Year), Tanner Matlick (Offensive Skill Player of the Year), Matt Barnes (Defensive Skill Player of the Year and Elite 20 Winner) and Chad Braun (Coach of the Year).
The other individual honoree was St. Norbert College’s Samul Staehling, who was the Newcomer of the Year.
