Oskaloosa Community Thanksgiving Meal 2016

Central Reformed Church will be hosting the 15th annual Oskaloosa Community Thanksgiving Meal at noon on Thanksgiving Day (November 24th). The meal is free and open to the entire community. In recent years nearly 250 people have been served on Thanksgiving, and organizers are expecting even higher numbers this year. The meal features traditional Thanksgiving favorites homemade by a team of over 60 volunteers. Organizers expect to serve 120lbs of turkey, 50lbs of ham, 60lbs of potatoes, 24 unique homemade desserts, and many other items. Andy Baker, Executive Ministry Director at Central Reformed, and one of the event organizers, shares that the high quality of the meal is a large part of what makes it stand out each year.

“Our team has always been committed to serving the best meal possible. While it would certainly be easier to use mixes and prepared foods, nearly everything is made from scratch the week of the meal. We want everyone who attends to have an amazing experience, so we go to great lengths to offer the best food and service so we can to ensure a wonderful Thanksgiving for all. We have an amazing team of volunteers that really strives to deliver the best possible Thanksgiving for every attendee.”

Baker is quick to point out that the meal is open to everyone in the community, regardless of church attendance or finances. “This meal meets so many needs in our community. Some attendees are empty nesters whose children are celebrating with the other side of the family, others lack the ability to afford a large Thanksgiving Meal, and some simply enjoy sharing the holiday with others. It is always a joy to share this meal with such an amazing cross-section of our community.”

Due to construction at Central Reformed (815 2nd Ave. E.) a few logistical changes are being made to accommodate everyone. Those needing barrier free access (i.e. no stairs) are advised to park in the gravel lot north of the church, or on S. 8th St. Assistance will be available on that side of the building, and an accessible dinning room will be setup there as well. Those not requiring accessible seating may enter on the south-side of the building (on 2nd Ave. E.) to access the main dining room downstairs. To ensure enough appropriate seating reservations are required by noon on Wednesday, November 23rd. Please indicate if anyone in your party requires accessible seating when making a reservation. Reservations can be made by calling the Central Reformed office at 673-3843 or via email (andyb@centralosky.com).
