Mildred Van Zee, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, November 05, 2016, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born Monday, February 23, 1925, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Arie and Mary Veerman Van Zee.
Mildred graduated from the Montezuma High School with the Class of 1943.
Following school, Mildred helped work on the family farm. She later sold Avon for a short time. She then entered the insurance profession and then became a partner at Heil Insurance. She started as a partner in the business with her brother-in-law, and later purchased his share of the business and became the sole owner. She sold her business and retired in 1992.
In her younger days, Mildred was a talented basketball and softball player. She was on traveling softball and basketball teams that were sponsored by her brother. They would travel all over the state participating in games and tournaments. Mildred was a pet lover, she often referred to her dachshunds as her fur family.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers: Herman, Maurice, Glen, Mike, Paul, and Lloyd Van Zee; five sisters: Pansy Pearl Van Zee, Hattie Heil, Annie Van Wyhe, Nellie Ver Beek, and Artie Fick; and her longtime friend and companion, Roger VanDoorn.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Stephen’s Memorial Animal Shelter or Mahaska Hospice.
