Dorothy Catherine Mathys, 86, of Oskaloosa and formerly of West Virginia, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born January 15, 1930, in Benwood, West Virginia, the daughter of John and Mary Szeligoski.

Dorothy attended school in West Virginia. Following school she went to work at Bobby Brooks Sewing Factory in West Virginia.

On June 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Page Mathys at Benwood, West Virginia. Page died March 4, 1987. Following their marriage Dorothy stayed home to care for her family and home.

Dorothy was a member of the Catholic Church and was part of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, in Moundsville, West Virginia, St. John’s Catholic Church in McMehen, West Virginia, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.

Dorothy enjoyed playing BINGO, playing cards (especially winning at cards), and watching gameshows on television. Her Faith and her family were the center of her life.

Her family includes her three daughters: Donna Taylor, Debra (& Scott) Moore, and Lori (& Larry) Oaks all of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, Walter Szeligo of West Virginia; a sister Rose Purpura of West Virginia; and many nieces and nephews, including John (& Fran) Szeligo of Florida.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Sharon Scott and Kathy Moore; a grandson; two brothers; and a sister.

As was Dorothy’s wish her body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Burial of her urn will be in West Virginia.
A private family visitation will be held at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Memorials may be made to Stephen’s Memorial Animal Shelter in Oskaloosa.
