Mabel J. Ellison, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born Tuesday, September 1, 1931, in Davis County, the daughter of William J. and Minnie Stivers Black.

Mabel graduated from Moulton High School in 1950.

Early on, Mabel worked at Moulton Café, Grinnell Shoe Factory and Kenmar Furniture Factory in Ottumwa. On December 31, 1951, Mabel was united in marriage to Carl E. Ellison at Lancaster, Missouri and he died December 29, 1993. They lived in Oskaloosa, Grinnell and later in Ottumwa until moving back to Oskaloosa in 1961.

Mabel later worked at the Continental Overall Factory. In 1978, Mabel began working at Pella Corp. and retired from there June 1, 1999.

She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star Rose Chapter #552 in Ottumwa and Wapello Shrine #4 in Ottumwa. Mabel became a member of the Moulton Christian Church on October 19, 1947 at the age of 16.

Mabel loved spending time with her sisters and the rest of her family and also going to coffee time with her friends at Mc Donald’s.

She is survived by three sisters: Ruth Davis of Ottumwa, Ethel Houser of Marion and Cynthnia (& Ivan) Wray of Moravia; a sister-in-law, Doris Burkhalter of Unionville, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons: Dave Eugene Ellison and Larry Dean Ellison; a daughter, Nancy Irene Ellison; three sisters: Mary Ellen Black, Grace Jackson and Betty Cubbage; four brothers-in-law: Charles Jackson, Bill Davis, Robert Owens and Robert Cubbage; her special friend, Oren James; three nephews: Roger Garrett, Jasper Jackson and Nick Houser; and a niece: Karen Houser.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 26, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in West Grove Cemetery in West Grove, Iowa at 12:30 P.M.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September 25, 2016 after 11 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Sunday from 1-3 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the West Grove Cemetery Association.
