RAMSEY, MINN. — First-round troubles continued for the Central College men’s golf team Saturday.

Central fired an opening round 312 at the par-72. 6,989-yard Links at Northfork, slotting them in 11th in the 54-hole, 16-team Twin Cities Classic, Tourney host Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) and St. John’s University (Minn.) lead at 283.

The building process continues for coach Jon Olson.

“We are still working toward finding our groove,” said Olson. “We got off to another slow start today, but only two of our players have seen this golf course before today.”

That familiarity helped seniors Brock Morris (Manchester, West Delaware HS) and Kacie Broeg (Burlington, Notre Dame HS). Morris fired 74 and is tied for 14th in the 91-player field and Broeg shot 76. He’s tied for 26th.

Consistency out of his fifth spot is what Olson is looking for and Spencer Welch (sophomore, Hubbard, South Hardin HS) provided that again, also shooting 76.

“Spencer is a grinder for us,” said Olson. “He goes out each day and is able to put a solid score on the card, which is great in his spot in the lineup.”

However, Central’s No. 3 and 4 players, Nash Bucher (sophomore, Huxley, Ballard HS) and Carter Mallett (sophomore, Norwalk) carded 86 and 92, respectively Bucher is tied for 82nd and Mallett is 88th.

Sunday the Dutch continue play at the par-72 Elk River Country Club before finishing at the LeSueur Country Club Monday.
