Oskaloosa–The William Penn volleyball team failed to slow down Peru State in a 3-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss Saturday.

William Penn (3-15, 0-4 Heart) fell by scores of 14-25, 22-25, 16-25.

The opening set was all PSC as the visitors took an early 10-2 advantage and cruised to the win.

WPU came out of the break with something to prove and led 6-3 against the Bobcats in the second round. The navy and gold continued to stay tight, in fact leading at 17-16. With the score knotted at 21-21, Peru State (21-3, 4-0 Heart) unfortunately rattled off back-to-back points and slipped past for another set.

The finale was quite similar to the opener with the visitors ahead at the start and never relinquishing the edge to conclude the sweep. The Bobcats have now won five matches in a row and 10 of their last 11.

Shawni Wills (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) headlined the offensive effort with nine kills and a .353 clip (WPU was outhit .321-.034). She also matched Lilly Martinez (Sr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology) with two blocks apiece.

Savanna Hartman (Sr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) was productive at the net as well with eight kills, while Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) (12 assists) and Haley Smith (So., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) (9 assists) ‘quarterbacked’ the offense.

Haley Vampran (So., Fort Worth, Texas, Exercise Science) ended the contest with a team-high 12 digs.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Canton, Mo. Tuesday to face Culver-Stockton in Heart play at 7 p.m.
