Central cracks football rankings
PELLA — For the first time in nearly six years, Central College has cracked the D3football.com top 25 rankings.
The Dutch debut at No. 25 after raising their season mark to 3-0 with a 33-0 whitewashing of Buena Vista University. It’s Central’s first appearance in the poll since Nov. 8, 2010.
Coming off a 6-4 campaign, Central turned a few heads with its 50-49 overtime upset of then-No. 19 Whitworth University (Wash.) Sept. 3. That was followed by a 45-17 victory at Augustana College (Ill.) Sept. 10.
Perennial powers the University Mount Union (Ohio) and the University of Wis.-Whitewater remain at one-two in the poll. Preseason Iowa Conference title co-favorites, the University of Dubuque and Wartburg College, are among those schools receiving votes.
The Dutch are on the road for the third time in four games next Saturday at Loras College. The Duhawks were 55-48 winners over Central at Dubuque last fall.
The D3football.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly.
