Mildred P. Vanderhorst, 98, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Bussey passed away Friday morning, September 9, 2016, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Mildred Pauline Vanderhorst, daughter of Leo and Edna (Parker) Hill, was born, April 3, 1918, in Bussey, Iowa.

Mildred was a 1935 graduate of Bussey High School. She married Raymond Donald Vanderhorst, February 8, 1936, in Oskaloosa.

They farmed east of Bussey until the 1970’s, when they moved to Oskaloosa.

Mildred was a member of the Bussey United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, a past member of O.E.S. in Bussey and Daughters of the Nile in Oskaloosa. Mildred and Raymond spent many winters in Florida and she enjoyed vacationing there even after Raymond’s death in 1999. Mildred enjoyed reading, embroidery, sending notes to family and friends and watching TV, especially “Walker, Texas Ranger”.

Mildred’s family includes her daughter, Karen Denburger of Oskaloosa; a son, Lyle Vanderhorst of Albia; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Vanderhorst of Zolfo Springs, FL; seven grandchildren: Jerry (& Tracy) Vanderhorst of West Bend, IA; Debbie (& Jeff) Snyder of North Fort Lauderdale, FL; Connie (& Brian) Williams of Jacksonville, FL; Shari (& Rusty) Roberts of Hamilton, IA; Sheli (& Tim) McDonald of Knoxville, IA; Scott Patrick of Pershing, IA and Tabitha Vanderhorst of Pella, IA; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and their families; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and her caretaker/friend, Donna Gordon of Oskaloosa.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Raymond, of 63 years, Mildred was preceded in death by a son, Donald and a son-in-law, Leland Denburger.

Funeral services for Mildred will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 13, at Garland-VanArkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Neil Montz officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Monday, at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Bussey United Methodist Church.
