Marcene Hanna, 83, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born September 25, 1932, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Tunis and Martha Ver Ploegh Dykstra.

At a young age she was baptized at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton. She attended school in Mahaska County. Following school Marcene worked at Vander Ploegh Bakery in Pella.

On March 12, 1952, she was united in marriage to Ervin L. Hanna at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Ervin died January 9, 2009.

Following their marriage Marcene farmed alongside Ervin. She also worked at the Mahaska Hospital for over 27 years.

In 1953, Marcene became a member of the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, she was active in the church for many years singing in the sextet, serving as superintendent of Sunday School, involved with Faith Circle, and helping with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and going to breakfast with her friends. She also enjoyed working on the farm, traveling, wintering in Texas, and taking bus trips. She delighted in spending time with her family.

Marcene gave of her time and talents to many organizations through her volunteer work. She especially enjoyed the many hours she spent volunteering at the Hospice Serenity House. She always made sure there was plenty of cookies and cookie dough at the hospice house to warm the hearts of the patients and their families.

Her family includes her three children: Duane (& Sheryl) Hanna of Post Falls, Idaho, Diane (& Mike) Darland of University Park, Iowa, Darla (& Doug) Keast of Altoona; a daughter in law (Doug’s widow) Lori (& Roger) Snyder of New Tripoli, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers and sisters in law: Marlene Dykstra of Pella, Elwood (& Beverly) Hanna of What Cheer, Donna Hanna of Pella, and Marvin Moody of Eddyville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Marcene was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Douglas Hanna; a granddaughter, Ashley Darland; two sisters, Viola Pothoven and Evelyn Den Hartog; and a brother, Reverend Virgil Dykstra.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 16, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
A family prayer service will be at 10:15 a.m. in the basement of the church.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Serenity House.
