(Garl) Jan McLeland, 77, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Jan was born February 23, 1939, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, the son of Eldred (Mac) and Marjorie Morgan McLeland.
Jan was raised in Capital Heights and attended West Independent Grade School. He attended high school in Altoona and graduated from there with the class of 1957. He continued his education at Central College in Pella and graduated in 1962.
In 1959, he was united in marriage to Luella Wolver. To this union two sons were born, Grant and Gordon. Jan and Luella later divorced. On May 16, 1998, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Mueller.
Jan was an educator for 22 years, he taught in several school districts including: New London, United Community of Boone, Albia, and Oskaloosa. He coached football, boys’ basketball and his sport of preference, girls’ basketball. His Albia basketball team qualified for the state tournament two years. During the summer for over 20 years, Jan managed detasseling crews in the area. He retired from teaching and went to work delivering travel trailers all over the United States with his wife Marilyn. The two of them made it to every state except Hawaii delivering trailers.
Jan loved to golf and was adamant about being in shape, he worked out faithfully for many years. He was proud of the fact that at the age of 75 he ran two 5k’s. He delighted in spending time with his family and looked forward to watching his grandchildren, Alex and Abby, play soccer and piano. On Friday nights in the fall Jan could be found at a high school stadium watching football. He also attended Drake Relays and the boys and girls state track meets since his grade school days. Jan and his brother Morgan organized the Capitol Heights reunions.
Jan was a member of the Lacey United Methodist Church.
His family includes his wife of over 18 years, Marilyn Mueller of Oskaloosa; two sons: Grant (& Davina) McLeland of Phoenix, Arizona and Gordon (& Betzy) McLeland of Davenport; three step sons: Marty Junkins of Holden, Missouri, Brent Junkins of Highland, California, and Shawn Junkins of Omaha; six grandchildren: Alex, Abby, Santana, Saylee, Shania, and Spencer; and a brother, Morgan McLeland of Marengo, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Morgan McLeland officiating.
Private family burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Open visitation will be Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
