Statesmen Winless at Season-Opening Tournament

Huntington, Ind.–The William Penn volleyball team improved as the first weekend of the year wore on, but still came up without a victory at the Huntington Tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Statesmen (0-3) opened with a 3-0 loss to host Huntington Friday (15-25, 8-25, 18-25). They then dropped a 3-1 matchup to Robert Morris (Ill.) Saturday (22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 22-25) before falling 3-1 to Roosevelt (Ill.) later that day (24-26, 31-29, 22-25, 22-25).

Savanna Hartman (Sr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) and Claire Simmons (So., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) paced the struggling offense with four kills each.

Newcomer Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) tallied eight assists, while Ashley Miller (So., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) finished with 16 digs. Nesreen Iskandrani (Fr., Lawrence, Kan., History/Government) had six block assists in her collegiate debut as well.

Simmons also came up with three block assists in the setback.

Simmons’ 13 kills were a team high, while Hartman recorded six winners as well. Steffen assisted 11 times and Haley Smith (So., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) posted 10 helpers.

Miller served a pair of aces and Haley Vampran (So., Fort Worth, Texas, Exercise Science) dug 19 balls.

Overall, WPU was outhit .098-.064, including a strong .286 in the lopsided second set in which it won 25-16.

Roosevelt 3, WPU 1

A team-high 12 kills were produced by Simmons; seven more points came via Hartman’s swing. Smith and Steffen each posted 12 assists, while Steffen also tallied three aces.

Miller’s defense provided 16 digs and Hartman was also big with three solo blocks and one block assist. Iskandrani was good for another trio of assisted blocks.

“We came out very slow in the first match, but as the weekend improved we started to show what I believe we are made of,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said. “I know we have a better team than what we showed this weekend, but we are young and a bit inexperienced so a start like this is not too surprising. We will get back to work and continue to get better.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Omaha, Neb. Tuesday to face Grace in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
