Rex Dean Welch, 87, of Oskaloosa died, Sunday, July 24, 2016, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born Monday, September 10, 1928, in Oskaloosa, the son of Eugene and Mae DeWitt Welch.

Rex graduated from the Oskaloosa High School. He was united in marriage to (Nellie) Wanda Selvy in 1947 and she died in 1994.

Early on, Rex worked several places including Purity Ice Cream and Maytag. He later worked at Mathew Lumber Company for 30 years, retiring from there in 1993. In retirement, Rex worked for Modern Floor Covering for about 15 years.

Rex enjoyed fishing, woodworking and gardening.

Rex is survived by his son, Rick (& Janet) Welch of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marsha Goodsell of Redfield, Iowa; five grandchildren: Melisa “Minnie” (& Scott) Morris, Brock (& Rhonda) Welch, Jeff (& Brandi) Kanselaar, Brad (& Jennifer) Welch and Jen “Two” (& Matt) Beaver; six great grandchildren: Zachary and Ethan Morris, Faith, Joshua, Sarah and Rebekah Welch, and another geat graddaughter on the way; his companion, Lillian Gay of Oskaloosa; his dog, Scooter; six sisters-in-law: Mary Welch, Jean Welsh and Marilyn Welch all of Oskaloosa, Wandah Selvy of Lovilla, Linda (& Merle) Wemhoff of Moberly, Missouri, and Fern Meeker of Moulton, Iowa; and a brother-in-law: Dean Lewin of Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter in infancy, Connie Mae; his parents; parents-in-law; nine brothers; two sisters; three sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 11 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Mark Doll officiating.
As was his wish, Rex’s body will be cremated following the service.
Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, July 27, 2016, after 1 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 5 – 7 P.M. to friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Gateway Church of the Nazarene Mission Fund.
