Forrest Gorsuch, 95, of Grinnell and formerly of Montezuma passed away peacefully Sunday morning, July 24, 2016 at the Mayflower Care Center in Grinnell. Forrest Wendell Gorsuch, the son of Lewis and Myrtle (Hutchinson) Gorsuch, was born on May 1, 1921 on the Gorsuch family farm east of Montezuma.

Forrest was a 1939 graduate of Montezuma High School. During high school, he excelled in basketball, baseball and track, setting a South Iowa Cedar League record in the pole vault.

On August 29, 1943, Forrest was united in marriage to Mary Jane Hicks in Montezuma. To this union they were blessed with one son, Larry.

Forrest farmed with his father for a few years, then his brother, John, before farming on his own southeast of Montezuma.

Forrest loved to farm and enjoyed raising Hampshire hogs. He also had a passion for black Angus cattle, John Deere and his row crops, hay and oats.

Forrest and Mary enjoyed polka, ballroom, square and round dancing and traveled to many dance clubs including the Dyersville Polka Festival, dances at Walford, Malcom and the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines. Forrest also enjoyed going out to eat at Bill Zuber’s, Pinecone Restaurant and Carnsforth Inn.

Forrest was a member of the Montezuma First Presbyterian Evangelical Church, Knights of Pythias, Farm Bureau and the Diamond M Square Dance Club.

Forrest was a wonderful husband, father, uncle and friend. He has a special dog, Barky, that lives near the Mayflower and still visited him on occasion. Forrest enjoyed special times with Mary’s niece Barbara Watson and her family.

Forrest is survived by his son, Larry Wendell Gorsuch of the Mayflower Community Center; his brother, John (& Kathleen) Gorsuch of Montezuma; a niece Nancy (& David Isch) Gorsuch of Grinnell; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Forrest was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane Gorsuch; sister-in-law, Barbara Hudson Gorsuch; and a nephew, David Gorsuch.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 27, 2016 in the Carmen Center at the Mayflower Community Center in Grinnell.
A Visitation/Luncheon will follow the service in the Carmen Center.
Burial will follow the luncheon in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mayflower Community Center.
