Summer Lunch Program To End On July 29th

Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program

Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program

Oskaloosa, IA: — Summer is winding down and so is the Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program. Over the course of the summer, the program has served free meals to children at 13 total sites in Oskaloosa, Beacon, and University Park. Kids who come to lunch sites also get to take part in fun, often educational activities, focusing on team work, reading, physical activity, and of course, fun!

So far during the Summer Lunch Program, 100+ local volunteers have helped serve over 6,500 meals to kids in the community. The program has grown significantly since its inception in 2014, when it had only four lunch locations and served 2,400 meals. Sponsors of the program, United Way, hope to see the program to continue on as an important community resource in the fight against childhood hunger.

This year Summer Lunch will be ending a few weeks earlier than usual, due to a decline in attendance attributed largely to extreme heat, camps, vacations, etc. The program will continue to serve lunch at all sites as usual, with Friday, July 29th being the last day.

2016 will be the last year that Martha Comfort will be the director of the program. The United Way Staff and Board would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to Martha for her dedication to the program, and wish her luck as she pursues other ventures as a volunteer in the fight against hunger.
