Ricky “Rick” Bittner, 60, of Pella and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 17, 2016, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born October 27, 1955, at Oskaloosa, the son of Lawrence and Nancy Wymore Bittner.

Rick attended school in Oskaloosa. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following his discharge from the Marines, he returned to Oskaloosa and worked various jobs.

On June 10, 1977, he was united in marriage to Jerri Fisk at the Assembly of God Church in New Sharon. Following their marriage, they moved to Missouri and Rick worked for Schwan’s Frozen Foods. They later moved to Carrollton, Texas, and Rick worked for the City of Carrollton for over 16 years. The family returned to Iowa and Rick went to work at Vermeer in Pella, where he has been employed for the last 21 years.

Rick enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in activities. He was always on the sideline with a helpful tip and a word of encouragement. He also enjoyed flea markets, auctions, and watching television.

His family includes his wife of over 39 years, Jerri Bittner of Pella; two sons: Robert Bittner of Oskaloosa and Daniel (& Sonya) Bittner of Ankeny; five grandchildren: Morgan, Kimberly, Noah, Lydia, and Titus; his father and his wife, Lawrence & Phyllis Bittner of Battlefield, Missouri; his mother, Nancy Criss of Oskaloosa; his mother and father in law, Daniel B. and Irene Fisk of Searsboro; a sister, Christina Smith of Oskaloosa; a brother, Brian Bittner of Oskaloosa; a step brother, Doug (& Linda) Vander Waal of Springfield, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Vickie Bittner; a step sister, Kathy Vander Waal; his paternal grandparents, Elva & Viola Bittner; and his maternal grandparents, Harmon & Lena Wymore.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 22, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the family.
