A Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

In early May of this year the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a series of sexual assaults involving a victim under the age of 12. These incidents occurred over a span of years ranging from approximately five to ten years ago. During the course of this investigation a cold case was reopened that was originally reported in 1997 involving the same suspect and a second victim under the age of 12. On July 19th Richard Wayne Leedom, age 62 of Oskaloosa, was taken into custody at his residence pursuant to an arrest warrant. Leedom was charged with three counts of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse, a Class B felony, and one count of Indescent Contact with a Child, an aggravated misdemeanor. Leedom is being held in the Poweshiek County Jail on $100,000 bond. The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
