Harvey Wayne Calvin, 80, of Oskaloosa died Monday, July 11, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was born May 30, 1936, at Iowa City, Iowa. At a young age Harvey was adopted by Wayne and Dorothy Morrison Calvin.

Harvey grew up and attended school in Thornburg. When he was of age he entered the United States Navy. He served on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea at the end of the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy he returned to Iowa.

Harvey went to work selling encyclopedias door to door. On May 29, 1959, he was united in marriage to Peggy Stout at the First Baptist Church in Oskaloosa. To this union three daughters were born, Cynthia, Patricia, and Jacque. Peggy and Harvey divorced in 1981. On June 30, 1983, he was united in marriage to Margy (Dingeman) Furnald, at Osage Beach, Missouri. Following their marriage, Harvey adopted Margy’s son Darrin.

Harvey worked various places throughout his career including, Ideal Manufacturing, U.S. Fibers, City of Oskaloosa, and lastly at the Mahaska Recycling Center, retiring from there in 1999.

Harvey was a born entertainer, early on he would travel, and get paid, to participate in roller skating shows. He was better known to have a guitar in his hands playing with one of his numerous bands that he was involved in over the years; lastly the Country Classics. He would play guitar all weekend to help make ends meet. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping.

His family includes his wife of over 33 years, Margy Calvin of Oskaloosa; three daughters and their husbands: Cindy (& John) Cunard of Davenport, Patty (& Joe) Kaskadden of Oskaloosa, and Jacque (& Mick) Green of Oskaloosa; a son, Darrin (& Shawna) Calvin of Burlington; two step daughters: Doris (& Larry) Hada and Dorothy (& Jeff) Crago all of Oskaloosa; a step son, Daniel (& Ann) Furnald of Rose Hill; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Melissa Cunard and Michael Green, Jr.; twin sisters, LaVonne and Laverne; and many aunts and uncles, including his aunt Ruth with whom he was very close.

As was Harvey’s wish his body has been cremated.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held Friday, July 22, in the Bates Funeral Chapel at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Jerry DuVall officiating.
Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date in the Golden Rod Cemetery at Deep River.
A Jam Session will begin on Friday at 4:30 in the Senior Center, the family will be present to greet friends and relatives, all musicians please bring your instruments.
