The Oskaloosa City Band will perform a Patriotic Concert on Thursday, June 30 at 8 p.m. in Oskaloosa’s City Square Park. Special Guests, the 34th Army Band Patriots Wind and Percussion Ensemble from Fairfield, will perform for 40 minutes, beginning at 7 p.m.

Concert goers are encouraged to enjoy Supper in the Shade and play yard games. Food vendors and yard games will be available at 5:30 pm and remain open throughout the evening. This week’s food vendors include: WanderLunch, Calico Jack’s, Sno-Biz, and The Simba Shop. The Oskaloosa Band Boosters are also having a fundraising bake sale for dessert. The yard games, provided by Mahaska Drug include: Checkers, Jenga, KerPlunk, Dominoes, Connect 4, and Scrabble, and a variety of fun games for all ages.

There will be a special flag raising by the American Legion and VFW Color Guard at the Mahaska County Courthouse at 8 p.m. There will also be a special salute to veterans and current military personnel. During the performance of The Armed Forces Medley, veterans and members of each branch of the military are encouraged to stand and be recognized.

The Color Guard will be presenting little flags to the children in the audience and there will be a “children’s march around the bandstand” during the performance of The Stars and Stripes Forever. The Veteran’s Memorial Committee will also be accepting donations to replace the flags in the cemeteries.

Guest Soloist, Allison McGuire, will perform with the band on several pieces, including: God Bless America and God Bless the USA. The band will debut a piece arranged especially for the Oskaloosa City Band that was originally written in 1918 during WWI. Entitled, Til We Meet Again, it will feature vocal soloist McGuire, and a trombone duet (Michael Groenenboom and Julia Groenboom).

Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and a bottle of bubbles (for use during the finale) and spend the evening in the park.
