Erik Jones takes second career pole at Iowa Speedway in NASCAR XFINITY Series qualifying

NEWTON, Iowa (June 18, 2016) – Nine races into his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career and William Byron is already a three-time winner. Byron dominated the field early, benefited from a strong late-race restart and stormed to the finish line to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Speediatrics 200 at Iowa Speedway.

Cole Custer finished second and Cameron Hayley wound up third after qualifying second. The pole sitter, John Hunter Nemechek, came home 12th after a slow pit stop on Lap 154.

The 18-year-old Byron has gone to Victory Lane in 33 percent of his starts including tonight’s trip to Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane. He led for 107 of 200 laps on Saturday and now sits second in the points standings. Winning at Iowa Speedway is nothing new for Byron after winning here last year in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West combination race en route to his championship.

“The truck was great all night,” Byron said. “The whole Liberty University team did a great job. I felt like the first run, we were a little bit free and stuck in traffic. Once we got that good restart and cleared the eight [Nemechek], we were able to set sail for the next couple restarts… It just worked out and really proud of this whole team. It’s amazing what we’ve been able to do.”

Action between Byron, Custer and Ben Rhodes went three-wide in the back half of the race, much to the delight of the Iowa Speedway fans on Wide Opening Weekend.

With just eight races to go before the field for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase is set, having three wins assures Byron one of the eight postseason spots.

The seven-race NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase will begin at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 24, and feature eight drivers and two elimination rounds, with four drivers competing in the Championship 4 in November.

Next up for Iowa Speedway is the NASCAR XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT.

ERIK JONES WINS THE POLE

Erik Jones, a two-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner at Iowa Speedway, captured the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series American Ethanol E15 250 presented by Enogen. Jones lapped the Fastest Short Track on the Planet with a top speed of 135.752 mph. It was Jones’ sixth pole of the season and the ninth of his NASCAR XFINITY Series career.

“Fortunately we were pretty good in qualifying there and to get the Freightliner Camry another pole this year is pretty awesome,” Jones said.

Daniel Suárez, who raced to his first series victory last week, had the second-fastest qualifying effort (135.385 mph). It’s Suárez’s third career front row start at Iowa.

“We know we have a fast car for the race,” said Suárez “We’ve got a good car and hopefully we’ll finish one spot higher tomorrow.”

Iowa Speedway’s 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams winner – Sam Hornish Jr. – will start third, giving Joe Gibbs Racing the top three spots on the grid.
