Shirley Mitrisin, 79, of Beacon passed away Sunday morning, June 5, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Shirley Jean Mitrisin, the fourth of five daughters born to Edgar A. and Sarah Elizabeth (Gill) Poe, was born January 14, 1937, in rural Beacon, Iowa.

Shirley was raised on a farm near Beacon and attended Beacon school. She was a 1954 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. On April 15, 1955, she married the love-of-her-life, John F. Mitrisin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.

The couple soon moved to Las Vegas, NV, where Shirley was employed as a bookkeeper for a furniture store. In 1959, they returned to Beacon. In 1973, Shirley was hired at Mahaska State Bank, now MidWestOne Bank. She primarily worked in the bookkeeping department and retired in 2008 after 35 years.
Shirley was never one to be idle, and in her “retirement” continued to serve as a bookkeeper for the city of Beacon, worked at the polls on election days, assisted the county treasurer during property tax season, and for the past two years served as the bookkeeper at Forest Cemetery.

Her family was always her priority, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also had many close friendships with which she enjoyed, shopping, traveling and dining.

Shirley’s family includes her children and their spouses: Kevin (& Tammy) Mitrisin and Kim (& Tony) Moore, grandchildren: Connor Moore and Zoe Mitrisin, all of Ames, Iowa; sisters: Bonnie Stout of New Sharon and Pat Vance of Tracy; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, John of 48 years, and sisters: Ramona Sherman, and Donna Poe as an infant.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 10, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. John Spiegel officiating.
Burial will be in Beacon Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Thursday morning at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
A Christian Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the conclusion of the visitation.
