Helen Moffet, 96, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Leighton, died Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa. Helen was born December 19, 1919, in Keosauqua, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Ruth Dooley Verbeek.

When Helen was a young girl the family moved to a farm near Leighton. She was baptized as a child at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton. Helen graduated from Oskaloosa High School. Following high school, Helen went to work at Wake’s Feed Mill in Oskaloosa.

On March 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Harry Moffet at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Following their marriage, Harry entered the United States Army. Helen continued to work at Wake’s while Harry was in the service.

When Harry returned from the military, they moved to the Caldwell Dairy Farm north of Oskaloosa. Helen stayed home to care for her family and home. She was not afraid to get her hands dirty and help Harry on the farm when she was needed. In 1959, they moved to Leighton. Helen went to work for Farmer’s Savings Bank in Leighton, now Leighton State Bank, she retired from there before moving to Oskaloosa in 1991.

Helen was a member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton where she was involved with the Dorcus Women’s group. She was also a member of the Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary and she volunteered at the snack bar there. She also gave of her time and talents to King’s Daughters and 4-H. She was involved with the Farm Bureau and the Live and Learn club. She had also been a census volunteer.

Helen enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and fishing. She and Harry enjoyed camping especially at the Iowa State Fair, they also spent many winters in Arizona, Texas, and Florida in their camper.

Her family includes her husband of over 72 years, Harry Moffet of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Phyllis (& Joe) Fitzpatrick of Stinson Beach, California; a granddaughter and her husband, Samantha Schwartz-Miller (& Jeff Miller); and a great grandson, Wyatt Miller.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Verbeek; and a sister, Kathryn Veldhuizen.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton with Reverend Mark Jicinsky officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
A procession will leave the Ebenezer Reformed Church at 1 p.m. on Tuesday for those wishing to attend the burial. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday evening from 6-8.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
