Herman Loyde Vander Linden, 94, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Oskaloosa died Saturday, June 4, 2016, in the Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center in Cedar Falls. Herman was born Thursday, February 9, 1922, in Pella, the son of Ruben and Sarah Adah Dykstra Vander Linden.

Herman graduated from Pella High School with the Class of 1940. He attended Central College and took training to become a mechanic working for United Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Hermen returned to the Oskaloosa area, courted and married Erma Smith and together they began farming north of Oskaloosa, ultimately purchasing a farm near Lacey in the early 70’s. For health reasons, Herman quit farming and bought a semi truck and began driving for Peoria Stock Yards, and later for DRS Trucking. After 20 years he retired from trucking.

Herman enjoyed wood working, traveling and spending winters in Phoenix, Arizona. He was member of Central Reformed Church where he served as an usher and assisted with Sunday School. In High School Herman was active in FFA and was known for raising Duroc hogs. He was a member of the Iowa State Championship Dairy Judging Team at the Kansas City Royal.

Herman is survived by his wife of 73 years, Erma Smith of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Rebecca (& Stephan) Dillahunty of Denver, Colorado; a son, Harlyn (& Jane) Vander Linden of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren: Bradlee (& Crystal) Vander Linden, Jill Vander Linden (& Bob Westfall), Carson Dillahunty, and Jason Harward; four great grandchildren: Natalee and Paige Vander Linden and Madison and Savannah Harward; a sister, Lorraine (& Melvin) Vander Hoek of St. Charles, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Norman Vander Linden.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 9, 2016, at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson and Gloria Nollen officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, June 8, 2016, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Central Reformed Church General Fund.
