Nivale Sopher, 89, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born December 22, 1926, in Alpha, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph William and Hattie Heitink TerLouw.

Nivale graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1944. Following graduation, she went to work for her father at the family dairy.

On June 23, 1946, she was united in marriage to Karl F. Sopher in Oskaloosa, he died October 4, 1974.

Following their marriage, Nivale worked at Woolworth for a time, then Mahaska Book Store for 14 years. She lastly worked for Wiggs Country Store, retiring from there after 14 years.

Nivale enjoyed needlework sewing, and reading. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She delighted in spending time with her family.

Her family includes her three sons: John (& Anne) Sopher of Coralville, Michael Sopher of Helena, Missouri, and Jeffrey (& Carol) Sopher of New Market, Missouri; eight grandchildren: Sarah Anne McDougall, Carrie Jane Sopher, Johanna Lynn Puyear, Amanda Kay Coachman, Laura Anne Eilers, Jennifer Marie Sopher, Katherine Jo Sopher, and Nathan Jeffrey Sopher; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Joseph (& Ruth) TerLouw of Buckley, Washington; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, Nivale was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Harriet Mendenhall and Joeva Lehfeld.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6, 2016, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held on Monday from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library for books.
