George James Deitch, age 80, passed away peacefully, in his home on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. George was born on May 23rd, 1936, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to James and Zella Pike Deitch.

George grew up in Kirkville, Iowa, and graduated from Fremont High School in 1953. He was united in marriage with Shirley Barker on June 4th, 1955.

George owned the Amoco Service Station in Fremont for many years. He took great pride in serving his community as a mechanic, local business owner and as a member of the town council.

As an avid motorcycle enthusiast he raced flat track professionally in his younger years, and continued to enjoy riding motorcycles, as well as following and supporting all forms of racing throughout the rest of his life. He loved being outdoors working in his yard and riding his bicycle around Fremont. He and Shirley also enjoyed drop-by visitors and George was well-loved by those who knew him.

George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Deitch; Children: Shelly Hoskins of Eddyville, Iowa, Steven (& Joyce) Deitch of Ottumwa Iowa, Bruce (& Maureen) Deitch of Corpus Christi, Texas, Robert (& Teresa) Deitch of Ankeny, Iowa, and Tricia (& Tony) Plummer of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Ashley Druckenmiller, Nick (& Stephanie) Deitch, Dala (& Travis) Brott, Jacob and Jordan Deitch, Hailey and Dawson Deitch, Jonah and Jensen Plummer; four great-grandchildren: Bode and Brystol Druckenmiller, Connor and Charlotte Deitch; a brother, Frank (& Dorothy) Deitch, a sister, Mary Lou (& Walter) Cubit; and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his father and mother, James and Zella Deitch; his mother and father-in-law, Della and Lysle Barker; a sister, Evelyn Deitch; brother and sister-in-law, Ernest Russell & Paroda Deitch; a grandson, Preston Deitch; and son-in-law, Steven Van Dyk.

A funeral service will be held at Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa, on Tuesday May 31st at 11:30 am.
As was George’s wish, his body will be cremated following the funeral ceremony.
Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date in the Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning from 10 until service time at 11:30.
Memorials may be made to the Hemophilia Association of Iowa.
