Donald E. Hite, 97, of New Sharon died Saturday, May 28, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born February 2, 1919, near Lacey, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Ada McFall Hite.

Don grew up on a farm west of Lacey, and rode his pony to North Center County School. He graduated from Lacey High School with the class of 1936.

Following high school, he continued helping his father farm with horses and mules on the family farm. Early on Don bought a school bus and started a bus route, he continued to drive bus for Lacey and New Sharon for over 27 years.

On March 19, 1939, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Newport at Lacey, she died March 4, 1996. In 1947, Don moved to a farm he bought southeast of New Sharon, he raised crops, cattle and hogs there until 1969. He was a talented carpenter and lived most of his life in homes that he built. In 1983, Don moved into New Sharon.

On August 15, 1998, he was united in marriage to Hazel Walker at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa.

In retirement Don started golfing, he had his first hole in one in 1985. He was generous with this carpentry talents and tools, he was always willing to help family, friends, and the church with projects. He also enjoyed traveling, woodworking, hunting, fishing, watching harness racing, and attending his children and grandchildren activities. He was a life member of the Lacey Methodist Church.

His family includes his wife Hazel Hite of New Sharon; three daughters: Carolyn Poe of New Sharon, Marilyn (& Bud) Lane of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Beverly (& Robert) Gray of Albia; seven grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren; a step son, Gary (& Nancy) Walker of New Sharon; ten step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; one step great-great grandchild; a brother in law and wife, Tommy (& Fern) Tucker of Milan, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his first wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents; a son in law, Bill Poe; his sister and brother in law, Doris and Gene Lanphier; his brother and sister in law, Fred and May Dean Hite; two step sons: Danny Walker and Ronald Walker; and a step daughter, Linda Wehrle.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverends Roger White and David Arulnathan officiating.
Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Donald Hite Memorial fund and will benefit the MHP Hospice Serenity House, Lacey Methodist Church and New Sharon Fire and Rescue.
