Wayne Lee Veldhuizen, 79, died at his home on May 28, 2016. Wayne was born on January 24, 1937 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Ada (Van Zee) Veldhuizen. He was the youngest of seven children. After his mother passed away when he was 8, his father married Elizabeth Elsloo, giving Wayne a step-sister as well.

Wayne graduated from Oskaloosa Community High School in 1955, and he also spent two years serving in the Army.

After the start of a beautiful friendship, Wayne married the love of his life, Leona Stouwie, on September 11, 1959.

Wayne was a dairy and land farmer on the family farm outside of Oskaloosa until 1994, and he also worked at Oskaloosa Engineering and Vermeer Corporation.

He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church all his life, serving as both deacon and elder. Wayne enjoyed camping, biking, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and playing with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, hard work ethic and love for his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Leona of rural Oskaloosa; four children: Wendy (& Lyle) Eason of Orange City, IA, Doug (& Juli) Veldhuizen of Leighton, IA, Jan Veldhuizen of Johnston, IA, and Lynn (& Mark) Vannette of Prosper, TX; 10 grandchildren: Kim (& Chris) Romkema, Michelle, Daniel & David Eason, Katie & Ian Veldhuizen, and Jake, Sam, Ahnalies & Joe Vannette; sister, Esther De Prenger; brother, Elmer (& Carolyn) Veldhuizen, and Martha Veldhuizen; Leona’s siblings of Bernie Hoyt, Elner and husband Cornie Spoelstra, Betty and husband Marvin Bruxvoort, Wilma and husband Carl Vander Wal; and sister-in-law Carolyn Stouwie.

In addition to his parents and step-mother, Wayne was preceded in death by his siblings: Edward Veldhuizen and wife Wilma, Arnold Veldhuizen and wife Louise, Ruth and husband Burl Roudybush, and Henry Veldhuizen; brother-in-law, Mark De Prenger; and step-sister, Dorothy and husband John Grubb; Leona’s siblings: Raymond, Gerrit and wife Faye, Jane and husband Raymond DeGeest, Helen and her husband Elmer Klein, Robert Hoyt, Marjorie and her husband Robert Leftwich and Cecil (Buck).

Funeral services will be held Tuesday May 31, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton.
A family prayer service will be at 2:15 Tuesday afternoon in the fellowship hall of the church.
Burial will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 in the Evergreen Cemetery. For those wishing to attend the graveside service, a procession will form at the Ebenezer Reformed Church at 12:50 on Tuesday afternoon. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday after 1 p.m. in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton and the family will be at the church from 5-7 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Pella.
