Dorothy Evelyn Fox, 92, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, May 22 2016, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born July 6, 1923, in Mahaska County the daughter of Russell and Lottie Houser Binns.
Early on Dorothy helped care for her brothers and sisters. When she turned 14 Dorothy went to work for Dr. Elliott in Oskaloosa as the housekeeper for the family. On June 18, 1944, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Fox at Kahoka, Missouri. Harold died August 31, 2015.
Following their marriage Dorothy stayed home to care for her family and home. Once her children were grown, she worked for a time at William Penn College, World of Fabrics, and the old Continental Overall Factory. Following Harold’s retirement, the two of them started to winter in Arizona. They enjoyed Arizona so much, they decided to make it their permanent residence for over 28 years. In 2007, they moved back to Oskaloosa to be closer to their children.
Dorothy was a member of the St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ in Oskaloosa. She was a very talented seamstress. She made all of the square dancing outfits for the two of them and she worked for a time at Marcella’s Tailor Shop in Oskaloosa. She also enjoyed doing needlework, tatting, dancing, and making teddy bears. She will be remembered for her teddy bears and lemon pies.
Her family includes her three sons and their wives: Glenn (& Shirley) Fox of Des Moines, Steve (& Linda) Fox of Rose Hill, and John (& Debra) Fox of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Charlene (& Greg) Tulley, Michele Fox, Jason (& Angie) Fox, Eric (& Kristen) Fox, and Aaron (& Teresa) Fox; eleven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; one sister, Esther Fridlington of Knoxville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harold Binns; and two sisters, Mary Barnes and Lily Stroud.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 27, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Liz Colton officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Thursday evening from 6-8 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Dorothy Fox Memorial Fund.
