Henry Edward Lisk, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born June 1, 1927, in Mahaska County, the son of Ralph G. and Mary Mabel Zeigler Lisk.
Ed graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1944. Following graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. On August 22, 1945, he entered the United States Air Force. His time in the Air Force took him all over the world. On February 1, 1947, Ed was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
Ed returned to Mahaska County and began farming south of Oskaloosa. On August 20, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Louise Smith in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. In 1955, they moved into Oskaloosa and Ed worked as a meter reader and maintenance man for the Oskaloosa Water Department. In 1957, the family moved to a farm they purchased on the north edge of Oskaloosa. Ed went to work for the United States Postal Service in 1962, he retired from there in 1987. He retired from farming in 2013, he and Betty continued to live on the farm until Ed’s death.
Ed was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W., and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
He loved to go to the sprint car races at Knoxville; in 1951, he was one of the fans that saw the first sprint car race at Knoxville. He also enjoyed restoring old tractors and cars, woodworking, helping at the Nelson Pioneer Farm, and Sunday road trips. He and Betty traveled many places, they especially enjoyed their trip to Europe and Alaska. He was active in the Democratic Party.
His family includes his wife of over 66 years, Betty Lisk of Oskaloosa; four children: Marcia (& George) Edgington of Dixon, Missouri, Elizabeth (& Gary) Moore of Montezuma, Vicky Schreiner of Oskaloosa, and Gary Lisk of Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren: Jeff, Jennifer, Jon, Jolene, Meagan, Lindsay, Amanda, Matthew, and Brooke; twenty-nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a sister, Nadine Moore of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Maxine Goldman.
A memorial service will be held Monday, May 23, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Michael Dotson officiating.
Military rites will be given at the funeral home following the service by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
As was Ed’s wish his body has been cremated and burial of the urn will be at a later date in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be held Monday, May 23, 2016, at 11:30 until service time at 1:00 p.m.
