Modell M. Newport, 85, of Lacey, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Modell was born August 13, 1930, at her grandparents’ home in Keokuk County, the daughter of Vere and Bonnie Moore Thatcher.

Modell graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1948. On February 9, 1947, she was united in marriage to Leland C. Newport, at Lancaster, Missouri. Leland died November 29, 2009.

Modell worked at Mahaska County Hospital, Family Medical Center and New Sharon Memorial Clinic. She was a member of a medical laboratory organization.

Modell enjoyed gardening, needlework, quilting, reading mysteries, and feeding the birds. She delighted in spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Her family includes her son and daughter in law, Jack and Julie Newport of Lacey; three grandsons: Charles (& Mandy) Newport, Wayne Newport, and Keith (& Jana) Newport; five great grandchildren: Andrew, Gabe, Malachi, Preston, and Olivia Newport; two step great grandsons: Chad Landis and Hunter Hernandez; a great great grandson, Hayden; a brother, Leroy “Bud” Thatcher of Phoenix; two sisters: Arlene Snodgrass of San Diego and Betty (& Dean) Garcia, also of San Diego, California; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Leland, Modell was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in law, Maxine Newport; a brother in law, Richard Snodgrass; and a sister in law, Barbara Thatcher.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Thursday, May 19, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Pinkerton officiating.
A procession will form at 10:10 Thursday morning at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa for those planning to attend the graveside service.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Serenity House.
