Betty Joyce Woods, 80, of Fremont passed peacefully Saturday, April 30, 2016, at MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born Thursday, January 23, 1936, near Downing, Missouri, the daughter of James Oral and Tilda Edith Staten Laws.
Betty graduated from Davis County High School with the Class of 1955. Following high school, Betty went to work for a jeweler in Bloomfield. She then went to work at John Morrell in Ottumwa where she met the love of her life. On June 20, 1969, Betty was united in marriage to Roland Kenneth Woods at Macon, Missouri; he died July 24, 1995. She worked various other places including: Davis County Savings Bank, Keith’s Grocery, REC, Lee’s Photography in Bloomfield and owned and operated a gift shop and bakery. At age 59, Betty completed her CNA training at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. Lastly, she worked at Friends Nursing Home in Bloomfield.
Betty enjoyed reading, cooking and trying new recipes. She was very involved in her church, Christian Union Chapel east of Fremont. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.
Her family includes her son, James Robert Laws of Fremont; her daughter, Kellie (& James) Benge of Warrensburg, Missouri; six grandchildren: Nick and Eric Brandt, Zachary and Colby Benge, Demi Laws and Mackenzie Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers: Oral Blaine “Boonie” Laws and Perry David Brewer; and three sisters: Lurena Elene Ritz, Alta Maude Mullinex and Doris Arlene Schumaker; and a grandson, James Laws II.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 10 A.M. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with Pastors Rod Nelson and Blaine Vos officiating.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Visitation will begin Tuesday, May 3, 2016, after 1 P.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
