Gordon Wymore, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. He was born Thursday, March 13, 1924, in the Monroe Township of Mahaska County, the son of Earl M. and Neola A. Curry Wymore.
Following school, Gordon helped on the family farm until joining the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served in the Philippines.
Following his discharge, Gordon returned to Mahaska County and farmed in the Coal Creek area with the Flanders family. On October 28, 1947, Gordon was united in marriage to Vera L. Batey in Lancaster, Missouri. Gordon later farmed with Curtis Batey and owned a lime business, he also drove semi for Pothoven Oil. Lastly, Gordon worked for Quad County Grain for several years retiring from there in the 90’s.
Gordon was a member of the Southern Iowa Mustang Club, Dutchmasters and the Oskaloosa American Legion. Gordon loved his 1966 Mustang. He also enjoyed working on cars, doing ceramics, going to flea markets and auctions and restoring old clocks.
His family includes his wife of over 68 years, Vera Wymore of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Sally Van Zee of Oskaloosa; a son, Michael (& Jeanice) Wymore of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Jeff (& Holly) Ridenour, Alicia (& Justin) Redix, Kara (& Eric) Van Zee-Arnold, Ben Wymore, Anna (& R.J.) Knox and Kelly (& Ryan) Miller; six great grandchildren: Abby Drost and Presley Arnold, Addison and Henry Knox and Houston and Zoey Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Ione Flanders and Madge Upton; and a brother, Earl Wymore.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 9, 2016, at 11 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Steve Howe officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will begin Sunday, May 8, 2016, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Sunday from 1 – 3 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Southern Iowa Mustang Club or to the Gordon Wymore Memorial Fund.
