DES MOINES — Competing in a stellar field at the Drake Relays Saturday morning, Logan Mulford (junior, Mount Pleasant) exceeded his personal-best and propelled his way to the top of Division III in the high jump.

One of only three Division III competitors in a field littered with Division I entries, Mulford kept pace by clearing a new career-high mark of 6 feet, 11.75 inches. Mulford wound up in a tie for eighth with Brett Pozolinski of Wis.-Milwaukee. Trey Culver of Texas Tech won with a leap of 7-3.25.

“I thought it was really good that he jumped well around solid competition,” associate head coach Jim Fuller said. “It was a unique competition for him to have a bunch of Division I guys in the field.”

Entering the day, the best height in Division III this season was 6-11 by Jon Jeffrey Tucker of Rowan College (N.J.), meaning Mulford may have the best mark in the country after Saturday.

Mulford missed on three consecutive attempts at what would’ve been a school record of 7-1.75. Saturday’s height was good for the third best in Central history.

“He actually had some really good jumps at 7-1.75,” Fuller said. “He had his hips on top of it but he couldn’t clear the bar. Sometimes it just takes getting a few jumps in at that height before you really know you can make it over”

Central returns to action next Saturday for the Fighting Scot Invitational hosted by Monmouth College (Ill.).
