The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of April is in honor of M.L. Curry.

Marleen enlisted as a apprentice Seaman in Coast Guard in 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa. He trained at Curtis Bay, MD and then served at Coast Guard Bases in New York and New London, CT, and on the USS General C. H. Muir. He was honorably discharged January 31, 1946 at St. Louis, MO.

After returning home, Marleen lived on farms near Indianapolis and Delta before moving to his farm east of What Cheer in 1951. In 1961, he moved to Oskaloosa and Marleen established the Curry Wilbert Vault Company. Marleen operated the company until he sold it in 1977. He was a member of the American Legion and an active member of the Honor Guard for more than 45 years.
