Esther Ward, 87 of New Sharon, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Esther Mae Ward, the daughter of William and Amy (Jones) Pfoutz, was born on March 27, 1928 in Union Township, Iowa.

Ester attended McMain Country School and New Sharon High School. After school, Esther was united in marriage to Clarence Ward.

Esther was a caregiver and took care of people in their homes and her parents. She also worked at the New Sharon Nursing Home as a nurses aide.

Esther had a love for animals, especially cats. She truly enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and was considered the neighborhood historian. Esther had a strong faith and enjoyed reading the Bible.

Esther is survived by a nephew, Steve Pfoutz of Oskaloosa; a niece, Mary Lester of Oskaloosa; many nurses and other friends from the Crystal Heights Care Center and the old neighborhood friends.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, William and Amy Pfoutz; her husband, Clarence Ward; and a brother and sister-in-law, George and Helen Pfoutz.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter.
