Area Sectional Wrestling Recap

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (E-B-F) won their Class 1A Wrestling Sectional at English Valleys Saturday with 202 points, while Sigourney-Keota finished 2nd with 185 points. Finishing first and second earned both teams a trip to the Class 1A Regional Team Dual tournament this Tuesday night at Sigourney.  Both teams will dual each other in the semifinals at 6pm, with the winner facing either SE Warren or I-35 in the finals. The winner of that round will advance to the State Team Duals.

Tri County/Montezuma finished 4th, Pekin 5th, English Valleys 6th and Cardinal was 8th. Sigourney-Keota will face E-B-F in the semifinals of the Class 1A Regional Team Dual tournament.       The E-B-F Rockets qualified six wrestlers for this Saturday’s District Tournament including four champions: Tyler Landgrebe at 106, Adam Proctor at 113, Alex Hanna at 132, and Dalton Griffiths at 170. The Rockets also had two runners-up, Dakota Boyer at 138 and Austin Angle at 182.

Sigourney-Keota also qualified six wrestlers for Districts. They included three champions: Lane Boender at 145, Kaleb Reeves at 182 and Noah Boender at 195; and three others: Luke House at 113, Nick Ives at 126 and Noah Reeves at 160, who each finished 2nd. Tri County/Montezuma advanced 4 wrestlers. These included champion Travis Lewis at 126, as well as Clay Harper at 195, Hunter Foubert at 220 and Tyler Thompson at heavyweight, who each finished 2nd. English Valleys advanced 2 wrestlers on to Districts, champion Zach Axmear at 152 and 2nd place finisher Cooper Andreassen at 106. Pekin and Cardinal each moved one wrestler through, Clayton McKim of Pekin at 120 and Dakota Miller of Cardinal at 145, who each finished 2nd.

West Marshall and Pleasantville finished 1 and 2 in the team race in the Sectional at Belle Plaine, also earning trips to the Class 1A Regional Team Duals. Lynnville-Sully finished 3rd, and North Mahaska 4th. North Mahaska qualified two wrestlers for Districts, which includes Jarrett Stodghill who won the championship at 126 and Tyler Strasser who was runner-up at 120. Lynnville Sully advanced just one as Carson Dunsbergen finished runne-up at 132. All these wrestlers will compete in a District Tournament this Saturday in Pleasantville, starting at Noon, where the top two finishers in each weight class will advance to next week’s State Wrestling Tournament.

Albia easily won their Class 2A Sectional while Knoxville narrowly finished 2nd, just 1 ½ points ahead of 3rd place PCM. Albia will wrestle Knoxville at Albia Tuesday in the Regional Team Dual semifinals, with the winner facing ADM or Ballard in the finals. The winner of that match will decide who will advance to the Class 2A State Team Duals. Centerville finished 5th and Davis County was 6th.

A couple highlight matches included top ranked Isley beating 4th ranked Brock Caviness of Knoxville by major decision 12-3 in the finals, and 10th ranked Wes Cummings of PCM upsetting 4th ranked Lawless at 152 by major decision 10-1.

Albia qualified nine wrestlers for Districts including four champions: Aden Reeves at 106, Storm Little at 113, Bryce Leschen at 145, and Carter Isley at heavyweight. David Morris at 126, Blake Lawless at 152, Brett Martin at 160, Ben Mason at 182, and Trevor Blackford at 220 each finished 2nd. PCM crowned three champions and qualified seven wrestlers for Districts. Lucas Roland at 138, Wes Cummings at 152 and Jarron Trausch at 170 were all champions, while Jakob Fenton at 106, Clay Van Wyk at 113, Chance Palm at 120, and Xavier Miller at 145 each finished 2nd for the Mustangs. Knoxville crowned four champions and advanced six total to Districts. Michael Ullestad at 160, Cameron Brown at 182, Jordan Beal at 195 and Travis Poffenbarger at 220 were all champs, while Joe Hollinrake at 132 and Brock Caviness at heavyweight each finished 2nd. Davis County advanced two wrestlers, Walker Henderson was champion at 132 and Dylan Henderson finished runner-up at 170. These wrestlers all advance to Saturday’s District Tournament in Knoxville, starting at Noon, where the top 2 finishers in each weight class will advance to State.

Moravia finished 3rd in their Class 1A Sectional at SE Warren, coming up just 23 points shy of advancing to the Regional Duals. Moravia did qualify six wrestlers for Districts: Allen Parlier at 106, Nicholas Martin at 126, Briar Cochran at 132 and Quinton Castell at 220 all were champions; and Dallas Price at 145 and Jacob Martin at 152 each finished 2nd. They each advance to Saturday’s District Tournament at I-35 Truro where the top 2 in each weight move on to State. Twin Cedars finished 8th and did not have any district qualifiers.

Washington and Mediapolis were in a dogfight for the team title in their Class 2A Sectional at Mediapolis, but Washington won the title by 4 ½ points and advanced 10 of their 14 wrestlers to Districts. Mid Prairie finished 5th and advanced four to Districts including: Levi Duwa, who won the title at 220, while Duncan McCain at 113, Cameron Tolander at 170 and Visouth Peterschmidt at 195 each finished 2nd. Their District will be at Clear Creek Amana on Saturday.

Grinnell came up just short of advancing to the Class 2A Regional Duals, finishing 3rd behind South Tama and Roland Story at their Sectional held at BCLUW Saturday. The Grinnell Tigers were still able to advance seven wrestlers on to Districts. They crowned three champions: Joe Simon at 106, Jake Simon at 145, and Tanner Hoffstetter at heavyweight; and four runners-up: Lane Milner at 126, Kaiden Gosselink at 132, Dalton Kies at 138 and Jevin Wyatt at 152. They will compete in a 2A District at Applington-Parkersburg on Saturday.
