Rita L. Slycord, 96, of Oskaloosa, passed away February 1, 2016, at the Crystal Heights Care Facility. Rita Louise Slycord, daughter of George William and Margaret Reed Hughes, was born July 30, 1919 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Rita was a 1938 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. In her early years she was a waitress at the Canary Cottage. She married Willard Levi Slycord, March 6, 1939, in Ottumwa, Iowa.

They made their home in Oskaloosa where Rita was a homemaker and eventually the mother of five children. She worked at Superior Ideal Manufacturing for a time.

Rita was a wonderful cook and will be remembered for the delicious meals and baked goods she served her family. She attended the Gospel Tabernacle.

Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Doris (& Bob) Medlin of Oskaloosa; two sons and two daughters-in-law: Roger (& Verla) Slycord of Adel, IA, Douglas Slycord of Oskaloosa (& Mary Ann) Slycord of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren: Scott (& Rhonda) Medlin, Lyle Medlin, Eric Slycord, Lori Stevens, and Brian Slycord; 12 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; a nephew, Bill Hughes; and two nieces: Donna Miller and Kay Gallant.

In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Willard of 43 years; two sons: Allan and Robert Craig; a granddaughter, Julie Handy; a sister, Vera Cockrell; and two brothers, Bill and Philip Hughes.

Graveside services will be held Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Henness Cemetery in rural Mahaska county.
Open visitation will be from noon til 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4.
The family will be present on Friday morning, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at which point a procession will form to leave for the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crystal Heights Activity Fund.
